Kingfisher Court: The Largest SIP Structure in the UK and Europe
The aim of the scheme was to create world-class facilities to provide the best mental health and learning disability services in the country with a pleasant, airy and comfortable setting for service users, staff and visitors. The client wanted this 86-bedroom Acute Mental Health Unit to be a sympathetic structure to blend into the landscape and create the most effective healing and therapeutic environment. The construction method had to balance large scale construction of a 23,000m² structure, with the equivalent of 3 miles of soleplate, with minimum disruption and noise to residents on-site. Waste elimination, low energy use, carbon reduction, maximum solar gain and environmental protection and enhancement were all important elements to be taken into consideration within the design.
